United Way Campaign Kickoff to Feature Tropical Getaway Vibes

Hangout at the Hangar guests can get up close with local aircraft, enjoy tropical treats and hear the latest about United Way of Kaw Valley from staff, partners and volunteers

Lawrence, KS—United Way of Kaw Valley’s Hangout at the Hangar event returns to the Lawrence Regional Airport on September 9. The after-work event raises the first dollars of United Way’s annual campaign in Douglas County.

Attendees have exclusive access to view aircraft displays, including a rare DC-3 courtesy of Vaerus Aviation (more info on the plane here: https://www.vaerusjetsales.com/dc-3/). The event also features live music, an open bar with tropical drinks, and a special tropical-themed dinner by Maceli’s.

Tickets are just $65 per person, and tables of 8 are available for $440. Tropical attire is encouraged, including Hawaiian shirts, flip flops and leis. Doors open at 4:30 and the event ends at 7 pm. Buy tickets online at https://www.uwkawvalley.org/AirportEvent or call Judy Riling at 785.581.0234. Information and updates are also available on UWKV’s Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/2745930995616693

Guests will be the first to hear from 2025-26 Douglas County Campaign Chair Derek Kwan, Executive Director of the Lied Center at the University of Kansas. Kwan explained recently why he volunteered to be this year’s chair: “I have always believed in the power of our community coming together for the greater good. This philosophy aligns perfectly with the United Way’s mission. To that end, it is truly an honor to support the campaign knowing that proceeds will support deserving families in need, provide care for the youngest citizens of Douglas County and ensure that our community is a welcoming place for all.”
